The Dillinger Escape Plan — Key Facts

Origin and Formation:
Formed in March 1997 in Morris Plains, New Jersey, USA, following the breakup of the band Arcane.
Original lineup: Ben Weinman (guitar), Adam Doll (bass), Chris Pennie (drums), Dimitri Minakakis (vocals).
The band’s name was inspired by a documentary about John Dillinger.

Musical Style:
Recognized as pioneers of mathcore.
Core sound blends new‑school hardcore, progressive metal, and elements of free jazz; early work also features grindcore traits.
Over time, the music incorporated clean vocals as well as industrial and electronic textures.

Early Career and Breakthrough:
Built a following through intense club shows across the US.
The Under the Running Board EP (1998) earned strong acclaim and helped raise the band’s profile.
Signed to Relapse Records.
Their debut album, Calculating Infinity (1999), was widely regarded as innovative and genre‑expanding.
Toured extensively, including shows with Mr. Bungle.

Lineup Changes:
The lineup underwent multiple changes over the years.
Dimitri Minakakis left in early 2001 and was replaced by Greg Puciato.
Mike Patton contributed vocals on the EP Irony Is A Dead Scene (2002).
Ben Weinman remained the only constant member throughout the band’s history.
Other musicians who played with the group at various times include James Love, Jeff Tuttle, Gil Sharone, and Billy Rymer.

Studio albums: Miss Machine (2004), Ire Works (2007), Option Paralysis (2010), One of Us Is the Killer (2013), Dissociation (2016).

Live Performances:
Known for high‑energy, often chaotic live shows.

First Russian performances took place in 2008 in Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

End of Active Run:
In August 2016, following the release of Dissociation, the band announced they would be ceasing regular activity.
A farewell tour took place in 2017.
The final show was held on December 29 at Terminal 5 in New York City.

Reunion:
A reunion was announced in December 2023 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Calculating Infinity.
Shows in June 2024 at Brooklyn Paramount Theater featured Dimitri Minakakis, Ben Weinman, Liam Wilson, Billy Rymer, and James Love.
The band continued performing select shows in 2025.
